  • Discovering Lydia Johnson Dance

    (This story from Oberon’s Grove tells of my first encounter with Lydia Johnson Dance in March 2009.)

    Sunday March 29, 2009 – Back to the City Center Studios tonight with Evan to watch a rehearsal by the Lydia Johnson Dance Company of their latest work – as yet untitled – to the music of the Polish composer Henryk Gorecki. This was preceded by excerpts from Lydia’s 2004 work IN CONVERSATION set to the spectacular Violin Concerto of Philip Glass.

    Waiting for the dancing to begin, Evan and I were speaking of the sheer number of invitations to dance events we receive on a daily basis. Sorting out what to see and what to miss increasingly becomes a dilemma as we try to decide from a press release whether it is something we will like or not; then it’s a matter of scheduling and also of hoping to space events out reasonably so there is time in between to reflect rather than dashing madly from one venue to another and never having anything really sink in. Fortunately I have struck it rich in many of my choices, such as TAKE Dance or Miro Magloire’s New Chamber Ballet.

    Up until this evening Lydia Johnson was just a name I was vaguely familiar with; what made me say ‘yes’ to this invitation was the announcement that she would be working to music of Gorecki. Music is always the key element for me when it comes to enjoying dance; if I like the music, I’m halfway there before the dancing even commences.

    So this is what happened: Lydia Johnson became overnight one of my favorite contemporary choreographers. Her dancers all appear to have strong classical ballet background and are wonderfully fluent in presenting what Lydia asks of them while each also shows keen individuality and personal magnetism. Lydia’s style seems to me very demanding physically, making us aware of the workings of the human body while always imaginatively aligning movement to the music . 

    Introducing the works, Lydia’s love of music shone thru in her words. Then her dancers took the floor and within seconds I knew I had found something I loved.

    In excerpts from IN CONVERSATION, dancer Jessica Sand (who reminds me of Alexandra Ansanelli) immediately began ‘speaking’ to me with her superbly fluid movement; there is a gestural language here and Jessica’s dancing has a nice feeling of the poetic. She is partnered by an enigmatic dark-haired and dark-eyed young man named Robert Robinson. The bearded dancer immediately swept Jessica into a spacious lift, his strength as a partner surprising in view of his slender frame. Beyond that he showed elegant port de bras and a presence with an intriguing touch of mystery. Watching these two dancers move thru Lydia’s pas de deux with such extraordinary focus and grace as the gorgeous Glass score filled the room was quite an experience. I felt a deep connection to the music and to the expressive commitment of the dancers.

    Meanwhile, Tucker Ty Davis stood on the sidelines. He seemed rather unassuming and his more hunky build made me wonder what kind of dancer he would be. The answer when he started to move was compelling: he is passionate, powerful, agile and fearless. His interjected solo lasted only moments but it was enough to put him right up high on my list of dancers to watch in future.

    The Glass score with its hypnotic rhythms and haunting minor-key lyricism practically screams: “Dance to me!” It seemed to me that music, dancers and choreographer had met in a perfect union. And after such an exhilirating experience I had to keep reminding myself “It’s just a rehearsal”. Now I can’t wait to see it in full performance setting.

    After a very short break, all nine of the Company’s dancers appeared in the untitled Gorecki. Still a work in progess, the piece uses part of the composer’s Harpsichord Concerto (‘…like the score of an old horror movie”…as Lydia aptly decribed it) and part of his String Quartet #1. Lydia stated that the two movements may eventually have a connecting interlude but I didn’t think it needed anything more; it looks so good and responds so well to the music just as it is.

    At first the five women seem to be in their own world, moving with quiet intensity in patterns which seem to express that they are an isolated group but not discontented with their situation. As the four men join them, the movement becomes more expansive. Couples form, and the large group often splinters into trios who perform synchronized gestures as the dancing swirls around them; I especially liked this aspect of the piece. The work is both visually and musically extremely satisfying and again the individual dancers continually draw the eye from one to another. Jessica Sand, Tucker Ty Davis, Kerry Shea and the blonde Eric Vlach were outstanding in the leading roles here. The ensemble were anything but anonymous: rather each dancer makes a personal mark on the choreography. I look forward to putting names to faces so that I can properly enthuse over their individual efforts. 

    (This evening marked the start of my enduring friendship with Lydia Johnson and with many of the dancers who have appeared in her performances thru the ensuing years.)

    Saturday September 17th, 2022 – Lydia Johnson Dance performing at New York Live Arts in Chelsea. Having missed two New York seasons due to the ongoing pandemic, the Company took the opportunity to appear at NYLA in September rather than wait until their accustomed performance time in the Spring: the dancers of course were anxious to perform again, and guest artist Craig Hall of New York City Ballet fame was available…so: on with the show!

    Unfortunately, I was feeling sick and could not attend any of the performances; but I did see all four of the works being presented when I dropped in at a studio rehearsal the previous week. My friend Dmitry Beryozkin photographed the dress rehearsal, and sent me some images. So this is not a review, really, but simply a photo gallery. 

    The Company were not idle during the long shutdown: they spent a week at Kaatsbaan, where Lydia worked on new creations, they danced (outdoors) in Connecticut, and they gave a warmly-received studio showing at the Martha Graham Studio Westbeth on May 2022, previewing two new works: Glide Path and For Eli. 

    Glide Path opened tonight’s show: it’s set to music by the contemporary quartet ETHEL. Here are some of Dmitry’s evocative photos from the dress rehearsal of Glide Path:

    Next came For Eli, a poignant work commissioned by New Jersey-based artist Laura Lou Levy, in memory of her pianist-son Eli, who loved playing the music of Frédéric Chopin.

    Following the interval, Craig Hall joined Lydia’s dancers for Time…and again, a new work set to Oscar Peterson recordings of jazz standards. This marked a return engagement for the former New York City Ballet star, whose performances in Lydia’s haunting Night and Dreams in 2019, dancing with Laura DiOrio, were deeply moving. Craig and Laura have reunited for Time…and again, joined by three other couples for a series of duets.

    On Sunday, January 26th, 2020, Lydia Johnson Dance presented excerpts from their repertoire – including a new work-in-progress set to music of Ludwig van Beethoven (celebrating the composer’s 250th birthday!) – at a studio showing held at the Alvin Ailey Dance Center. The afternoon offered a preview of the Company’s 2020 season, wherein Craig Hall and Stephen Hanna, both former members of New York City Ballet, will appear as guest artists.

    The 2016 season marked a transitional period for Lydia Johnson Dance: the roster of the Company was evolving. Their annual New York City performances took place in March rather than June.

    The performances in June 2017 were given at New York Live Arts in Chelsea. The program was especially strong, with two new ballets: TRIO SONATAS, set to Handel, and This, and my heart beside… one of Lydia’s most personal works, to music by Philip Glass. The all-female CROSSINGS BY RIVER made a welcome return to the repertoire, and a repeat of the previous season’s GIVING WAY was handsomely danced.

  • Lydia Johnson Dance ~ Retrospective

    It was on a March evening in 2009 that I first encountered the choreography of Lydia Johnson; a press invitation sent to me by publicist Audrey Ross had piqued my curiosity enough to prompt me to go – with my fellow blogger Evan Namerow – to a studio showing by Lydia Johnson Dance.

    What I discovered that night was choreography that successfully melded elements of classical ballet and contemporary dance, that had a keen connection to the music, and that – rarest of all – had an emotional resonance that I had found in only a handful of works by current choreographers of the day.

    I can’t remember now the sequence of correspondence between Lydia and myself that led to my being invited, along with my photographer/friend Kokyat, to a rehearsal of Lydia’s company down at the Battery Dance studios. At that time, Kokyat was a dance photographer in the making; he became a master over time. In the ensuing months, he and I spent many hours in that studio – so steeped in the very essence of dance – and we became friends with all the dancers…and with Lydia herself.

    By now, the dancers were used to having Kokyat and I breathing down their necks, so to speak…so much so, that Kokyat was permitted to photograph the Company’s 2011 performance in New York City from backstage. 

    This first installment covers roughly 2009-2011, with a couple of 2012 images thrown in. I’ll continue this retrospective in a few days – picking up where I left off – when I have had time to gather photos for a second gallery.

  • Upcoming: Lydia Johnson Dance ~ Studio Showing

    On Sunday December 2nd at 3:00 PM, Lydia Johnson Dance will present the latest in their ongoing series of studio presentations in which excerpts from works-in-progress and from the repertory will be shown in an intimate setting.

    The event takes place at the Ailey Studios, 405 West 55th Street.

    This review by Barnett Serchuk for BroadwayWorld of Lydia Johnson Dance‘s recent program at Ailey Citgroup Theatre reminds me of my own first encounter with Lydia Johnson’s work.

    On a whim, I went to one of Lydia’s studio showings in 2009, knowing nothing about her and with zero expectations. Nine years on, I still think she’s one of the very few truly distinctive choreographers on the New York scene.

    Lydia Johnson Dance will be at New York Live Arts, 219 West 19th Street, on June 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, 2017. The performances are at 7:30 PM each evening. Tickets here.

    Two new works choreographed by Lydia Johnson will be presented: Trio Sonatas, to music of Georg Friedrich Handel, and This, and my heart beside…, inspired by Emily Dickinson’s poem “It’s All I Have to Bring Today” and set to music by Marc Mellits and Philip Glass. Completing the program will be a revival of Lydia’s 2012 ballet for five women, Crossings By River, to music by Osvaldo Golijov, and Giving Way, returning from last season, with music by Mellits and Golijov.

    On Friday June 16th, Lydia invited photographer Nir Arieli and me to her rehearsal at the Ballet Hispanico studios. Giving Way was being run when we arrived, and here are some of Nir’s images from that work.

    After a brief respite, the large ensemble involved in This, and my heart beside… took their places and I got to see this moving and disturbingly beautiful work in a full run-thru. 

    Here is the Emily Dickinson poem from which the ballet’s title is derived:

    “It’s all I have to bring today—
    This, and my heart beside—
    This, and my heart, and all the fields—
    And all the meadows wide—
    Be sure you count—should I forget
    Someone the sum could tell—
    This, and my heart, and all the Bees
    Which in the Clover dwell.”

    The ballet is built around three couples, each of them at a different stage in their relationship:

    Dona Wiley, Hope K Ruth, Blair Reavis-Tyler, and Lauren Treat form the ensemble for this poetic work, and also appearing will be Sara Spangler, a very young dancer who was not at today’s rehearsal.

    This, and my heart beside… opens with a sort of prologue set to a Marc Mellits score which serves to set the stage for the drama which will unfold. Above: Dona Wiley, and Katie Martin-Lohiya (seated).

    Lydia then turns to one of Philip Glass’s most haunting works, from his Etudes, Book 2: No 17, for the unfolding of the ballet. I won’t give away too much about the piece – Nir’s photos will say more than words can express – but this is a dancework which grasps the heart and never lets go.
